A water line break forced the closure of most of the buildings at Lakehead University Tuesday afternoon.

Officials with the university say crews working beside Lake Tamblyn accidentally ruptured one or more water lines sometime after 3 p.m. The school was forced to issue an advisory to notify students that while an evacuation wasn’t in effect, everyone was encouraged to leave because sprinkler systems were cut off.

Night classes for Tuesday were cancelled, but officials were confident the break would be fixed by 8 p.m. and that classes would resume as scheduled Wednesday morning.

Building effected by the water line breaks included the university centre, the Braun Building, library and the ATAC building.

The main student residences were left unscathed as they have a separate water system.
