Keith Hobbs said water wars may be on their way.

The Thunder Bay mayor, newly elected chairman of the Great Lakes and St. Lawrence Cities Initiative, says the issue of water in the five freshwater lakes being used to supply communities elsewhere is just one of the issues he expects to deal with in his new role.

Hobbs, who attended the annual general meeting last week in Marquette, Mich., said stemming the spread of the Asian carp and water levels on Lake Huron and Michigan are two of the more pressing issues the 104-member group will face in the coming year.

Hobbs also said he hopes to expand membership by at least 10 cities.

The annual conference will be staged in Thunder Bay next year, a great chance to showcase the city, Hobbs added.
