THUNDER BAY – There may be some positive news on the horizon for a waterfront hotel first slated to open in 2016.
Officials with the oft-delayed Delta Thunder Bay Hotel and Conference Centre confirmed an invitation for an April 25 update and celebration of the project, which has been in limbo for several years.
The announcement is scheduled to start at 11:30 a.m. at Mariner’s Hall at Prince Arthur’s Landing.
This past January tbnewswatch.com reported the hotel would not be completed in 2017, as previously promised, but instead would be delayed until 2018.
Construction on the project restarted last November.
“Completion day is 16 months from the time we started, which would be in November,” Resolve Group Inc. president Gisele MacDonald said three months ago.
The project was already operating under an extended completion deadline, required to finish the project by the end of 2017.
The eight-storey hotel was first announced in 2012 and was scheduled for a 2016 opening. When Marriott purchased Delta in 2015, a number of design changes were recommended.
The public is also welcome to attend the celebration, a company official said.
City manager Norm Gale called it good news.
"We’re pleased of course, that the Delta Thunder Bay Hotel and Conference Centre is proceeding. We continue to work with the developer, Resolve Group, to further the project and seeing council’s vision of Prince Arthur’s Landing come to fruition," he said on Friday in an email response.
