THUNDER BAY — Skating season is about to start at the waterfront rink.
The popular winter-time attraction at Prince Arthur's Landing is set to officially open on Friday.
Catherine Wilson, a city community and event development coordinator, said the ice surface is set to open at a regular time despite milder weather earlier in the season.
“We are ready for residents,” she said. “Visitors of all ages and abilities are welcome to enjoy skating at the waterfront throughout the winter months.”
The rink is open from noon to 8 p.m. from Monday through Wednesday, and from noon to 9 p.m. Thursday through Sunday.
“The Zambonis usually start off in the morning, preparing the ice,” she said. “The facility attendants will make sure that the lodge is open, and the equipment is ready to go, signage is up, and then at noon we're ready to go.”
Wilson said skaters are encouraged to come prepared and dress accordingly.
“Additional benches will be placed around the skating pad and there's a portable washroom, it's available,” she said. “There's an outdoor fireplace, it's available for a cozy warming station as well as outdoor lighting and music to enhance the user experience.”
