Wawa domestic dispute leads to spousal assault, animal cruelty charges

WAWA, Ont. - A 30-year-old faces charges of spousal assault and cruelty to animals following a domestic dispute that took place in Wawa Friday morning. 

Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) officers responded to the incident in the community, located nearly 500 kilometres east of Thunder Bay, around 9:45 a.m. Friday.

As a result of an investigation, one individual was arrested and charged with the following:

  • Assault - Spousal, contrary to section 266 of the Criminal Code (CC),
  • Overcome Resistance by Attempting to Choke, Suffocate or Strangle another Person, contrary to section 246(a) of the CC, and
  • Cruelty to animals - unnecessary pain, suffering or injury, contrary to section 445.1(1)(a) of the CC.

OPP specified only that the accused was 30 years of age. The individual has been released from custody, and is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Wawa in September.
