THUNDER BAY — Last month was one of the warmest Octobers ever in Thunder Bay, but area residents will have to bundle up for a few days this week as temperatures dip a few degrees below normal.
Environment Canada data released Monday shows the mean temperature at Thunder Bay Airport last month was 9.5 C, compared with the normal October mean of only 5.0 C.
"It was way warmer than normal," meteorologist Peter Kimball said.
One new October record high temperature was set, on the 19th, when the thermometer reached 25 C.
The mean daily maximum for the month was 14.5 C.
Kimball said there have been a few warmer Octobers, the most recent being in 1963 when the mean daily maximum was about three degrees higher.
He said Thunder Bay is in a bit of a cold snap right now for the first time in awhile.
"We haven't seen many below-normal temperatures for awhile, but we're getting them finally," Kimball said, pointing to Tuesday night's forecast low of minus eight, compared with the normal of minus four.
By Thursday, however, temperatures are expected to climb back to above-average, with predicted highs and lows a few degrees better than normal.
Snow flurries were reported in the Thunder Bay area on Sunday, but Kimball said there's nothing more substantial on the horizon so far.
"No storms in the forecast. The average November snowfall actually becomes significant, about 28 centimetres typically, but none in the forecast yet."
