THUNDER BAY -- Wind gusts of up to 70 kilometres an hour have caused plenty of inconvenience for hundreds of homeowners and businesses in the Thunder Bay region.

Hydro One reported that electricity was cut off on Tuesday morning in several rural areas.

A tree blown onto a power line caused the largest interruption just after 5:00 A.M.  It affected nearly 900 customers in Fowler, Gorham and Jacques Townships.

Major outages also occurred east of the city, disrupting power to hundreds of customers in Shuniah Township and the Dorion-Hurkett area.

Other power blackouts were reported in areas such as Rosslyn, Whitefish Lake, the Highway 61 corridor approaching the U.S. border, Kashabowie, and Highway 17 west of Shabaqua.

Thunder Bay Hydro reported an outage affecting up to 100 customers in the West Riverdale Road area.

City public works crews were being dispatched Tuesday to deal with more backed-up culverts and catch basins, even though Environment Canada recorded a 24-hour rainfall total for Thunder Bay of only 10 mm as of 7:00 A.M.
