THUNDER BAY — Environment Canada has issued a Special Weather Statement for the City of Thunder Bay, and freezing rain and snowfall warnings for other areas of northwestern Ontario.

City residents can expect heavy rain today and tonight, with total amounts approaching 50 millimetres by the time the precipitation tapers off Thursday.

The rain will likely become mixed with snow overnight or Thursday morning, but snow accumulations in the city are expected to be minimal.

Freezing rain warnings have been issued for numerous communities including along the Lake Superior shoreline from Cloud Bay to Marathon, and inland to Arrow Lake, Kakabeka Falls, Shebandowan, Atikokan, Raith, Gull Bay, Beardmore, Geraldton, Longlac, Nakina, Manitouwadge and Hornepayne.

Snowfall warnings are in effect farther west, including Ignace, Dryden, Vermilion Bay and Sioux Lookout, where 15 to 25 centimetres of snow is expected by Thursday. The snow may mix with ice pellets at some times in some areas.

Kenora, Sioux Narrows and Fort Frances can expect 10 to 15 centimetres of snow, possibly mixed with rain or ice pellets at times near the U.S. border.
