THUNDER BAY -- The official start of summer is only about a month away, but after a holiday weekend of cool, wet weather, many Thunder Bay residents were left wondering if spring will ever arrive.

Environment Canada statistics released on Tuesday show the average temperature so far this month is more than three full degrees below what is typical for this time of year.

"It has been notably cooler than normal for May so far," said meteorologist Geoff Coulson, "6.4 degrees Celsius...and our long-term average for the whole month is 9.5 C."

Spring in the northwest has also been wetter than usual.

Coulson said Environment Canada recorded 57 millimetres of rain and melted snow in Thunder Bay last month, about 15 millimetres more than average.

May is also tracking to finish with more precipitation than the city usually gets.

Coulson said the weather will start to warm up and approach more seasonal values on Thursday, but "we'll still be a bit unsettled...not necessarily big major weather systems bringing large areas of rain...but some clouds and on-and-off showers for the coming weekend too."
