A lantern destroyed by a lightning strike on the Whalen Building last year has been restored.
City construction services manager Gerry Broere said they took advantage of the contractors on site to rebuild the lantern that had been completely destroyed last May when lightning struck the roof of the 100-year-old Cumberland Street building, sending rubble onto the street and cars below.
To rebuild the lantern, one of the existing lanterns had to be disassembled. Casts were made and new terracotta units were created.
"It's quite an exciting project to be able to have the opportunity to maintain a building like this," said Broere.
The Whalen Building is a designated historical site, so it has to be restored exactly as it was originally.
"To be able to have some say in how this is being put back together is quite exciting. I'm quite proud of it," said Broere.
