THUNDER BAY -- A high-profile murder case in Winnipeg is being retried, more than three decades after the victim's death.

Thirteen-year old Candace Derksen disappeared on her way home from school in 1984. Her frozen remains were found weeks later in a storage shed.

In 2007, twine that was used to tie the girl up, along with a hair sample found at the scene, was sent to a  laboratory in Thunder Bay, operated at the time as Molecular World, for DNA testing.

Mark Edward Grant was subsequently arrested and convicted for second-degree murder, but the verdict was overturned and a new trial ordered in 2013.

The defence intends to challenge the DNA evidence at the trial that started on Monday. It has suggested someone other than Grant may have committed the crime.
