THUNDER BAY — As the snow begins to blanket the streets, the city decided to start enforcing its annual calendar parking and priority route restrictions to ensure plowing can be done effectively.
This means parking officers will be out in full force from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. as of Monday Dec 9.
Although calendar parking has been in effect since Nov. 15, roads manager Ian Spoljarich said the city does not enforce the calendar parking restrictions until the “first couple of snowfalls.”
“But, we're thinking with what we got last night and what maybe is coming this weekend that by, maybe, Monday we'll need it in place. That's why we had it for Monday and then it gives people a couple of days to hopefully be prepared for,” Spoljarich told Newswatch.
According to roads manager Ian Spoljarich, from 2 a.m. to 7 a.m., plows will clear one side of priority roads and the other side the following day after five centimetres of snowfall.
During this time, vehicles are prohibited from parking on the designated odd or even calendar day “to make sure we can clear the roads properly so your car doesn't get blocked in or plowed around and their safety issues as well,” said Spoljarich.
Priority roads are designated as priority routes for service and emergency vehicles.
As for residential roads, Spoljarich said those roads do not get plowed until 10 centimetres of snow have fallen.
“The little bit we got the other day wasn't enough to go into residential streets,” he said.
