Winter weather disrupts travel plans for rescue dogs

While transporting more than 100 rescue dogs from Manitoba to Newfoundland, travel issues left Northern Reach Rescue Network no choice but to hunker down in Thunder Bay.

THUNDER BAY — On their way to find a new forever home in Newfoundland, more than 100 rescue dogs from Manitoba are left to hunker down in the back of the transport trailer as the northern Ontario winter weather got in the way of their travel plans.

“We are housing 138 dogs for the day until cube van can come and pick them up and take them back to Winnipeg and take them back home,” said Erin Manahan of the Northern Reach Rescue Network

The rescue dogs are being housed in the back of the transport trailer at Narvi’s Truck and Auto in Thunder Bay.

However, the dogs need to get out of their kennels, go for a walk, and need play. With a quick Facebook message, Northern Reach Rescue Network called upon the community for help.

“We’ve had an absolutely incredible turnout from the community. Narvi’s has been absolutely amazing. We are using their bay. We had probably a good 100 people come through. Some are taken the dogs home to foster for the day and then they are going to bring them back later, and some are just come to help walk,” Manahan said.

The cube vans from Winnipeg are expected to be here in Thunder Bay around 11 p.m. Thursday, but that is dependent upon the weather. However, Manahan said if they can’t make it, then it won’t be until Friday morning that these furry friends return home.

Manahan said there have been times when their rescue transports had broken down in other communities. Those communities help in times of need. She is extremely happy to see Thunder Bay doing its part for these animals.

“It’s been an absolutely amazing turnout to help these dogs,” Manahan said.
