THUNDER BAY -- Winter weather is set to return to areas of Northwestern Ontario including Thunder Bay, Environment Canada warns.

The agency issued a winter weather travel advisory in effect from early Sunday evening through Monday morning for the city of Thunder Bay. It expects rain to develop Sunday afternoon or early evening, changing to snow as temperatures drop in the evening.

Snowfall amounts of 10 to 15 centimetres are possible, especially inland from Lake Superior.

Other parts of the region are expected to see even heavier snowfall, with areas like Dorion, Upsala, Marathon, Nipigon, and Geraldton expecting 15 to 25 centimetres and winds gusting up to 50 km/h, resulting in poor visibility.

That could make travel on Highway 11/17 hazardous at times into Monday, Environment Canada warned.

Conditions should improve Monday afternoon for areas northwest of Lake Superior and later in the day for areas farther east, the agency added.

Residents can find up-to-date weather advisories at Environment Canada's website.
