TORONTO – Leashja Grant put the Lakehead Thunderwolves on her back on Friday night, but couldn’t carry them to victory alone.

The OUA’s leading scorer and rebounder was at it again on the road against the Toronto Varsity Blues, recording her ninth straight double-double to start the season, scoring 22 points and adding a whopping 23 rebounds in a 72-64 defeat that dropped LU’s record to 6-3.

Lakehead led by three after one, but were down two at the half and were outscored in each of the two second-half quarters.

Grant, who is averaging a league-best 22.7 points a game and whose 13.7 rebound average is four better than her nearest competitor, had three assists, three steals and four blocks in a monstrous performance.

It just wasn’t enough.

Keyira Parkes had a game-high 23 points for the Varsity Blues, Rahshnida Atkinson adding 15 for the victors, who improved to 4-5.

Bridget O’Reilly hit four three-pointers and finished with a dozen points for LU, whose starting four outside of Grant only totalled 26 points.

Lakehead wraps up the first half on Saturday in Toronto against the Ryerson Rams.
