THUNDER BAY – A Kasabonika Lake woman faces multiple charges after allegedly threatening a group of children with a knife on Picton Avenue.

No injuries were reported as a result of the incident.

Police officers were dispatched to a disturbance involving a weapon in the 200 block of the north side street just after 7:45 p.m. on Wednesday, the Thunder Bay Police Service stated in a release.

Officers learned a female suspect had been wielding a knife while “attempting to fight, chase, and threatening to kill others in the area,” the TBPS said.

Police were able to quickly locate the woman, who according to the TBPS proceeded to assault one of the responding officers.

A TBPS spokesperson said the woman had made physical contact with an officer, but the interaction did not cause any injuries.

The suspect in the case was identified by police as Marcella Anderson, 24, of Kasabonika Lake First Nation.

According to police, an investigation identified four victims between the ages of eight and 13 years old.

Anderson allegedy approached the four children while holding an object that appeared to be a knife and, unprovoked, “began waving the knife toward the children before chasing them.”

She reportedly chased the children towards the 300 block of Windsor Street, where she dropped the weapon, then attempted to grab some nearby barbeque tongs but was stopped as officers arrived and intervened.

Anderson was taken into custody after allegedly assaulting an officer, and transported to police headquarters.

She has been charged with four counts of uttering threats (cause death or bodily harm), four counts of assault with a weapon, and one count of assaulting a peace officer.

The assault with a weapon charge does not require contact to be made with the victims, a police spokesperson said.

Anderson appeared in bail court in Thunder Bay on Thursday, and was released with conditions and a future appearance date.
