Woman charged in connection with Trillium Way fire appears in court

THUNDER BAY - A woman charged with criminal negligence causing death in connection to a fatal fire on Trillium Way appeared in a Thunder Bay Courtroom on Wednesday.

Tracey Mawakeesic, 48, was arrested Tuesday evening and has been charged with criminal negligence causing death and criminal negligence causing bodily harm. 

The matter has been remanded until Thursday Oct. 18 to allow Mawakeesic time to contact an attorney. She remains in custody.

Thunder Bay Fire Rescue responded to reports of a structural fire at a Trillium Way residence Monday at approximately 1 a.m.

Smoke and flames were visible coming from the residence and a woman reportedly jumped from a second story window before fire crews arrived. She was transported to hospital with serious injuries.

After the fire in the kitchen was contained, fire crews discovered the body of a male inside the residence.

The deceased male has been identified as 30-year-old Kyle Stoney and the woman who suffered bodily harm has been identified as 23-year-old Martina Wesley.

The fire is under investigated by the fire marshal’s office.
