THUNDER BAY – A Thunder Bay woman faces multiple charges, including impaired driving, after colliding with a fire hydrant early Wednesday morning.

In a release issued Thursday, police said officers found the woman, 35, asleep at the wheel of her damaged pickup truck after responding to reports of a collision on the city’s north side around 6:30 a.m.

Officers observed a broken fire hydrant and a pool of water on the ground at the scene, in the area of Red River Road and Kenogami Avenue, said the Thunder Bay Police Service.

Police located the woman in a black pickup truck closer to the Carrie Street and Algonquin Avenue area, and said an investigation revealed the vehicle had been swerving on the roadway before making contact with the fire hydrant.

“Officers approached the vehicle, which was still running, and observed a female in the driver’s seat slumped over the steering wheel,” the force stated. “Officers turned off the vehicle and woke up the woman. Once awake, police observed multiple signs of impairment.”

As the accused was placed under arrest, she attempted to provide a false identity, police said, but an investigation revealed the true identity of the accused.

The accused was transported to police headquarters, and stands charged with impaired operation of a motor vehicle, obstruct a peace officer, and two counts of failure to comply with a release order.

The woman appeared in bail court on Thursday and was remanded into custody, with a future court date.
