UPDATE: Woman dies in single-vehicle collision

A Thunder Bay woman, 34, has died after a vehicle struck a tree near Boulevard Lake. The driver of the vehicle faces charges.

THUNDER BAY – A 34-year-old Thunder Bay female passenger has died after a single-vehicle collision in Current River.

First responders were dispatched to Lyon Boulevard at Rita Street just after 2:30 a.m. Thursday morning, following reports a vehicle had struck a tree, Thunder Bay police stated in a release.

Police asked the public to avoid the area until further notice, with several roads closed as police investigate the collision.

The 35-year-old male driver of the vehicle was located and taken into custody shortly after responders arrived on scene, said Acting Sgt. Tom Armstrong, and is expected to face several charges.

“We anticipate laying charges of dangerous driving causing death, impaired operation causing death, and fail to remain at the scene of a collision causing death,” he said.

The driver was in hospital with non-life threatening injuries as of Thursday morning.

Armstrong said the vehicle appeared to have left the roadway and collided with a tree, sustaining heavy damage.

The accident happened along a stretch of Lyon Boulevard that runs along the east side of Boulevard Lake, where the posted speed limit is 30 km/h, he said.

Armstrong said he could not yet comment on whether speed or road conditions played a role in the collision, with an investigation ongoing.
