THUNDER BAY -- A call this weekend to emergency responders in Shuniah has once again underscored the importance of having a working carbon monoxide detector in your residence.

EMS paramedics were dispatched to a home to attend to a woman with a medical emergency.

Upon their arrival, their monitors indicated a dangerously high level of carbon monoxide in the building.

Two other residents appeared unaffected.

The woman was transported to hospital, where her condition improved upon receiving oxygen.

A Shuniah Fire crew also attended the home and determined the problem was probably caused by a downdraft issue with a wood stove.

It was also found that a CO detector in the residence was not working.

The Fire Service is recommending that all smoke and carbon monoxide alarms be tested on a monthly basis to ensure they're in working order.
