A man’s attempted soggy escape from the law ended when his arresting officers were waiting for him at the river bank he was swimming to Thursday afternoon.
Thunder Bay Police Service officers responded to a 9-11 call from a woman who had just confronted, and struggled with, a man who had broken into her Bernard Street home shortly after 3 p.m.
Officers arrived on scene shortly after the break-in with the force’s police service dog, Thunder. The accused man was tracked northbound in the North Marks Street area toward Northern Avenue.
Police say the suspect headed east through residential yards.
Several other officers spotted the man run in the Vickers Street area toward the McIntyre River.
As officers approached the river bank, the man dove into the water and made it to the other side.
Unfortunately for the suspect, the swim was a wasted effort as two city police officers were waiting for him on the other side.
The 33-year-old man was taken into custody after a short struggle. he was escorted to the Balmoral Street police station.
The man now faces charges of break-and-enter to commit robbery and breach of probation.
The suspect is expected to appear in court Friday.
