THUNDER BAY – Medical officer of health Dr. Janet DeMille says it may be best to avoid a Thunder Bay weekend hallmark for the time being. While yard sales are once again allowed, DeMille gently discouraged the practice while speaking with Tbnewswatch Friday.

“I would encourage people to look at other ways [to shop],” she said. “I think selling things online would be a safer way.”

Yard sales had been prohibited under the province’s ban on social gatherings. However, that ban was lifted as Thunder Bay and other regions moved into Stage 2 of reopening earlier this month.

For those who decide to go ahead with a sale, DeMille emphasized it’s key to hold it outside where greater air circulation reduces COVID-19 risks, not in a garage.

The provincial emergency order limiting gatherings to a maximum of ten people applies to yard sales. The person holding the sale is responsible for ensuring there are never more than 10 people on site at a time, including themselves, said DeMille.

Other steps hosts can take to ensure safety: space display tables to allow physical distancing, be mindful of safely exchanging money while maintaining distance, and use a mask if in close proximity to others.
