THUNDER BAY – The City of Thunder Bay is reminding residents that curbside leaf and yard waste collection is scheduled to begin following the long weekend. This year’s pick-up is later than normal, thanks to a slow start to the spring season.

Residents are also reminded that only waste in Kraft paper bags will be accepted, and while there is no limit on the number of bags, there is a 40-pound limit on individual bags.

Sticks and branches can also be put out for pick-up, but must be bundled with rope or twine and be under a metre long and 61 centimetres in diameter.

No grass clippings are allowed.

“Leaf and yard waste put out at the curb is added to the compost pile at the solid waste and recycling facility, and the result is a rich soil additive for flower gardens and lawns,” said Jason Sherband, manager of solid waste and recycling services.

“As a bonus, putting organic waste out for this special collection helps extend the life of our landfill by reducing the waste disposed of as regular garbage.” Anyone requiring more information can phone 625-2195.
