THUNDER BAY -- Customers of the company that distributes natural gas in Thunder Bay and across northwestern Ontario are getting a small break.

Effective Oct. 1, Union Gas residential customers can expect to see their monthly bills drop by an average of $1.75.

The company says the average annual bill for a residential household in northwestern Ontario will be $971.

That takes into account the rate cut, which the company says amounts to about $21 a year, or a reduction of roughly 2 per cent in the average natural gas bill.

Union Gas received approval from the Ontario Energy Board to drop rates across Ontario. Rate schedules vary among three zones in the province—northwest, northeast and southern Ontario.

"As we head into winter months, this rate adjustment will be welcome news to customers," said Union Gas vice-president Jim Redford.

Under OEB approval, customer rates are adjusted quarterly to reflect changes in the market price of natural gas supplies.
