The heat in your home could literally be going straight out the window as the weather gets colder.
Even though windows make our homes bright, cheerful places to live, they’re also responsible for almost 25 per cent of heat loss.
Since the average window lasts 20 years or more, replacing it just to save energy may not add up. Instead, try these tips from Hydro One to stop the heat from escaping:
1. Check the trim on windows for gaps between the frame and your house. As much as 13 per cent of your home’s heat loss could be escaping this way. If possible, stuff insulation between the window and frame. If that’s not an option, try caulking around the window.
2. Another inexpensive option is to build a barrier against the cold by sealing your windows with plastic sheeting in the winter. All you need is a hair dryer, double-sided tape, and some inexpensive plastic sheeting available at home improvement stores. Both indoor and outdoor sheeting are available, so choose the right product for the job.
3. On sunny winter days, open your window coverings to let the sun help warm up your home. Once the sun goes down, close them to keep the warmth in. Think of your curtains as the best way to insulate your windows. However, if your windows are more than 20 years old, investing in new ones is worth considering.
