THUNDER BAY — A local 17-year-old faces multiple charges after allegedly assaulting an adult male in a wheelchair at a County Park-area residence.

Police officers responded to reports of a disturbance at a home on Iris Crescent just after 11 p.m. on Monday.

The incident is believed to have begun with a verbal argument that began between four people within the residence.

That escalated when the accused youth assaulted an adult male in a wheelchair, the Thunder Bay Police Service stated in a release.

Following that initial assault, the youth is alleged to have brandished a knife and threatened the victim, before fleeing the home on foot.

The victim and the accused, who cannot be named under the Youth Criminal Justice Act, were known to one another.

Officers located the accused as they arrived on scene and took him into custody without further incident.

The youth stands charged with assault with a weapon, assault causing bodily harm, uttering threats – death or bodily harm, and failure to comply with a release order.

He is expected to make an appearance for bail court on Tuesday.

Paramedics with Superior North EMS tended to the victim before transporting him to the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre for further evaluation and treatment of his injuries, which are believed to be non-life threatening.
