THUNDER BAY - A teenage boy has been charged with second-degree murder in connection with an ongoing homicide investigation in Thunder Bay.

The youth appeared in Thunder Bay bail court on Thursday, June 4, and was formally read a charge of second-degree murder in connection to a May 30 incident  at the Midtown Inn that left one man dead.

The identity of the accused cannot be released in accordance with the Youth Criminal Justice Act.

The teen was remanded into custody to Monday at the request of his counsel.

The youth also faces a charge of possession of fentanyl for the purpose of trafficking, proceeds of property exceeding $5,000, obstructing a police officer and a number of breach offences.

Crown counsel Stacey Hamilton on Thursday morning requested a temporary publication ban which prevents the publication of evidence discussed at the youth’s court appearance.

Police were initially dispatched to the Midtown Inn on Saturday, May 30, at 10:20 p.m. after responding to reports of a person in distress.

The victim, Paul Winnifred Vivier, 29, has been identified by police.

Thunder Bay Police Service charged and arrested Denis Terry Bernard, 36, with second-degree murder on Sunday.

Both Bernard and the youth will appear in court next week.
