Justice Joseph Wilson handed down his sentence Thursday afternoon in a Thunder Bay courtroom.
On Thursday morning, Zaitzeff, 69, pleaded guilty to one count of invitation to sexual touching, two counts of assault, and one count of unauthorized possession of a firearm.
Defence attorney, Scott Hutchinson, was seeking 12 months probation, while Crown attorney, Marc Huneault, was asking for between 18 and 24 months of probation.
A conviction on the charge of invitation to sexual touching carries a mandatory minimum sentence of 90 days in jail. But Justice Wilson credited Zaitzeff with six months of pre-trial custody that he said more than satisfies the minimum sentence. Both members of counsel were not seeking any additional time in custody.
Justice Wilson cited several aggravating factors he considered when determining his decision, including the severity and lasting impact the offences had on the victims. But he also cited Zaitzeff's apparent remorse following his guilty plea and a lack of any criminal record.
Terms of probation include no direct or indirect contact with the victims, a fine of $500 for the firearm charge, abstaining from possessing or consuming alcohol, providing a DNA sample, being included on the national sex offender registry for 10 years, and to obey all orders and instructions provided by the probation officer.
Details of the charges are subject to a publication ban to protect the identities of the victims.
