Ed Atwill came out of nowhere to take the first-round lead at the season’s final local golf major.

Atwill, playing in the second flight at the Canadian Tire District Amateur, fired a five-under 66 on Saturday at Chapples Golf Course and owns a two-shot lead over Robert Cumming and John Shaw, the latter of whom was playing in third flight.

Albert Drake shot 69 to sit three back and Barry Caland, seeking a record 13th major, fired a 70.

Round 2 of the 54-hole event goes Sunday at Strathcona Golf Course, with Monday’s final round slated for Whitewater.
