Lakehead Athletics and Jon Kreiner, head coach of the women's basketball team announced Monday an addition to the recruiting class of 2011-2012 – Karen Sawchuck, of Fonthill, Ont.

Sawchuck attended E.L. Crossley Secondary School and has proved to be a successful athlete and teammate during her tenure there, where she co-captained the team all four of her years and was named team MVP three times.

Sawchuck will be studying kinesiology in the fall semester, with a future goal of going to teacher's college.

A 5-foot- 7-inch point guard, Sawchuck’s basketball resume includes two regional all-star team appearances, and a spot on the Niagara region team competing in the Ontario games.

Her high school team has also placed 5th in the AA OFSAA.

She is a ball-handling and play-making specialist, averaging 10.9 points, 12.2 assists and 2.7 steals per game throughout her high school career.

Sawchuck is enthused to be joining the Lakehead family:

"I am really looking forward to being a Thunderwolf,” she said. “It will take a lot of hard work but I can't wait to play at the next level. I really felt comfortable with the players as they made me feel welcome and I can't wait to get started at LU."

The team’s head coach is equally as enthusiastic.

"Karen provides us with depth at the point guard spot,” said coach Kreiner of Sawchuck's decision to join the Thunderwolves. “She is athletic and sees the floor well. Karen is a tough defender, is an aggressive offensive player who will take it strong to the basket but can also knock down the three.”
