Facing a stiff test taking on NCAA Division 1 competition, the Thunder Bay Sportop midget AA Queens dropped a 10-3 decision to the Bemidji State Beavers in an exhibition contest Friday evening at the Sanford Center in Bemidji, Minn.
The Western Collegiate Hockey Association squad jumped out to a quick three-goal lead before the Queens' Michela Cava struck midway through the opening frame.
Bemidji St. would tack on two more tallies before the first period was out to grab a 5-1 lead after 20 minutes.
Thunder Bay would respond with two quick strikes early in the middle frame courtesy of Jillian Langtry and Kaitlyn Tougas. Cava would draw assists on both markers.
The home side answered however striking three times to grab an 8-3 lead after two periods.
Bemidji St. rounded out the scoring with another pair in the third.
Rachael Kelly and Montana Vichorek would score twice for Bemidi St. on the night while MacKenzie Thurston dished out three assists to pace the Beavers offensively.
The Queens were outshot 54-17 in the game with Megan Leikkari and Jayde Turcotte splitting time in net for Thunder Bay.
The squad now heads to St. Cloud, Minn., Saturday morning to begin play in the St. Cloud State Fall Classic. They'll meet the Shattuck-St. Mary's Sabres under-19 side in their opener at 11 a.m.
Bemidji St. meanwhile gears up to begin NCAA play next weekend when they host Providence College in a two-game set.
