BISMARCK, N.D. – And just like that, the Thunder Bay Border Cats are a first-place team.
The Northwoods League club downed the host Bisarck Larks 5-2 to grab a four-way share of top spot in the North Division.
Once again it was the pitching that led the way.
Drew Gooch tossed seven innings of shutout ball on Saturday night, walking two and striking out three to even his record at 2-2.
Billy Cook tripled twice and doubled once, scoring a pair of runs and driving in another to lead the way offensively for the Cats, who jumped two games over .500 at 3-1. Cook’s RBI was his 20th of 2018.
Cam Pearcey had two hits in five trips to the plate, walking once and scoring a single run.
The Larks scored a pair of unearned runs off reliever Brandon Trammell, the save going to John Sakowski despite allowing a hit and a walk in the ninth.
It was the third straight win for Thunder Bay, who are tied with Duluth, Mankato and LaCrosse in second-half play.
Thunder Bay travels to Mankato Sunday to start a two-game set with the Moon Dogs.
