Border Cats no-hit by Waterloo's Jacob Stone

Jacob Stone made Waterloo Bucks history Monday night.

Jacob Stone made Waterloo Bucks history Monday night.

The right-hander tossed the first complete-game, nine-inning no-hitter in franchise history, stoning the Thunder Bay Border Cats with a brilliant seven-strikeout, two-walk performance en route to the 8-0 win, the Bucks eighth in eight tries against their division rival.

Stone, 20, threw 119 pitches, winning for the second time in two starts for the Bucks, his first at Waterloo’s Riverfront Stadium.

It’s the first time in franchise history the Border Cats have been no-hit, and the first no-hitter in the league since Tony Vocca and Mike Couch combined to complete the feat two summers again against the Wisconsin Rapids Rafters.

Waterloo’s Brian Tarajack no-hit Brainerd in the second game of a doubleheader on Aug. 5, 1998. It was the 17th no-hitter in Northwoods League history.

Chesny Young led the way offensively for the Bucks, collecting two hits in five trips to the plate and a pair of RBI.

Steve Cazares surrendered six runs in 6.2 innings for the Border Cats, giving up 11 hits while walking none and striking out four.
Ryan Atwood allowed the other two Waterloo runs, taking over for Cazares in the seventh.

The Border Cats (3-9) head to Alexandria on Tuesday. Waterloo, the first-half champions, improved to 12-1 in second-half play.
