THUNDER BAY -- No lead is too safe with the Thunder Bay Border Cats at the plate.
As has been the norm all season long, the Northwoods League squad dug itself an early hole, trailing the Alexandria Blue Anchors 5-0 after an inning-and-a-half.
But the Cats stormed back Wednesday night, scoring three times in the eighth and hung on for a 9-7 win, the team`s second straight triumph.
Right-fielder Robb Paller lead a middle-of-the-lineup charge, collecting two hits in four at bats, scoring three times and driving in a run.
Sal Taormina and Tyler Rolland also had a pair of hits and an RBI apiece for the Border Cats, who improved to 5-11.
It was reliever Michael Daley (1-2) who proved to be the star of the show Wednesday night.
Daley took over for ineffective starter Ben Allison, chased in the second after giving up five earned runs on eight hits.
Allison tossed 5.1 innings of shutout, two-hit ball, allowing the Cats time to claw their way back in front of 544 fans at Port Arthur Stadium.
Thunder Bay, which took over fifth place in the Northwoods League’s North Division, scored once in the third to cut the lead to four, then climbed to within a run with a three-run fourth.
They took the lead for good in a two-run-fifth, making a loser out of Alexandria’s Ryan Froom (0-1).
