Border Cats sign four players for 2020

First off-season signings include a pair of Canadians.

THUNDER BAY – The Thunder Bay Border Cats 2020 roster is starting to take shape.

The Northwoods team on Thursday announced the signings of four players, including a pair of Canadians, to play for the team next summer in its 18th season.

Infielder Owen Jansen, an Oakville, Ont. native, is a junior at Florida’s St. Leo University. A 5-foot-10 second baseman who previously played for Purdue in the Big 10, Jansen hit .191 for Purdue in 019, with nine doubles and 11 RBI.

Barry, a right-handed pitcher, is a freshman at Saint Louis University. The 36-th ranked prospect in Ontario according to perfectgame.org, Barry attended St. Aloysius High School and played for the Ontario Blue Jays under current Border Cats manager Mike Steed.

The Cats also signed outfielder Jeffrey Elkins and catcher Parker Rowland.

Elkins hit .284 in 52 games last season with three home runs, 16 doubles and 32 RBI. He’s a native of Lafayette, La.

Rowland, a switch-hitter, is a freshman at Arkansas State University and comes from Owasso, Okla.

The No. 2 catching prospect in Oklahoma, Rowland, can also pitch when called on, with a fastball that tops out at 87 miles per hour.
