The Border Cats first-half title hopes have all but disappeared.
On Saturday, facing the team everyone in the Northwoods League North Division is looking to catch, the Cats offence fell short, dropping a 7-1 road decision to the first-place Waterloo Bucks.
The Bucks scored once in the first, two in the third and three in the sixth to open up a 6-0 lead.
Cory Kay drove in Thunder Bay’s lone run in the eighth, scoring Tyler Duplantis.
John Ziznewski had three hits, scored once and picked up a pair of RBI to lead Waterloo’s offence.
Jordan Church, who gave up just three hits, but walked four batters before leaving with one out in the sixth, took the loss for the Border Cats.
Waterloo starter Tyler Peyton threw five innings of four-hit ball to earn the win. The Cats (10-15), who had won two straight heading into the game, are now 7.5 games behind Waterloo (17-7).
The two sides meet again on Sunday at Riverfront Stadium.
