Mike Busniuk’s debut behind the Lakehead Thunderwolves bench was not a winning one.

Chris Behenna scored the tying goal at 17:29 of the third period and then popped home the game-winner just 25 seconds into overtime, leading the Waterloo Warriors to a 5-4 home-ice win on Friday night.

Matt Caria, Adam Sergerie, Mike MacDonald and Trevor Gamache, who gave the Wolves the lead 6:47 into the third, scored for Lakehead. Justin Larson, Joe Underwood and Kirt Hill were Waterloo’s other goal scorers.

The loss comes slightly more than 24 hours after the Wolves relieved coach Joel Scherban of his duties, a move made necessary when players gave team officials an ultimatum that left the team no choice but to fire the coach.

The loss drops firs place LU’s record to 3-1-1, while Waterloo improved to 2-1-0. Lakehead takes on last place Laurier (0-2-1) on Saturday, returning home next weekend to face archrival Western.
