Matt Caria didn’t wait long to help the Lakehead Thunderwolves to an overtime win on Friday night.
The second-year forward drilled home the winner just eight seconds into the extra frame, leading the Wolves to a 3-2 win over the UOIT Ridgebacks and into sole possession of third place in the OUA West Division.
With the win Lakehead improved to 6-4-1 in OUA play.
Ryan Oliver opened the scoring 63 seconds into the contest for the Oshawa-based hosts, but Ryan McDonald got it back before the period ended, potting his team-leading eighth of the season. Brock McPherson handed LU a 2-1 lead on the power play at 11:00 of the second, but Tony Rizzi tied it up with a booming shot 2:34 into the third.
Alex Dupuis stopped28 shots to earn the win, while Jeff Dawson was successful on 34 of 37 shots directed his way.
The two teams will try it again on Saturday.
