Lakehead’s Matt Caria had the opening goal Thursday and teammate Jordan Smith had an assist, leading Canada into the semifinals of the World University Games in Ezurum, Turkey.
The 9-1 win over Slovakia guarantees the Canadians will play for a medal.
Caria netted his third of the tournament on the power play, beating Slovakia netminder Peter Pus 1:51 after the opening faceoff.
Kevin Baker, Yashar Farmanara and Carleton’s Brandon MacLean of Halifax, who finished with two goals and three assists, also scored first period goals, putting Canada up 4-0 at the break.
MacLean, Francis Charland and Maxime Langelier-Parent added three more in the second.
Western teammates Baker and Keaton Turkiewicz rounded out the Canadian scoring in the third. Slovakia’s Richard Vojsovic had his team’s only goal, beating Jim Watt at 10:05 of the final stanza.
Canada awaits the winner of the Russia-Czech Republic quarterfinal.
