Cats sign five more

The Thunder Bay Bordercats have a big south paw coming north of the border this summer. Stanford University sophomore LHP Garrett Hughes and four other new Cats were announced by the team Tuesday.

Stanford University sophomore LHP Garrett Hughes and four other new Cats were announced by the team Tuesday. At 6’8” and 245 pounds, Hughes is 2-1 with a 2.55 ERA so far this season with the Cardinals, one of the top teams in Division-One college baseball.

UCLA Bruins’ pitcher Zach Ortiz and first baseman Pat Gallagher are also coming up from the PAC-10 conference. RHP Ortiz is 2-0 this year with a 2.61 ERA while Gallagher has hit .105 in 13 games this season with 5 RBIs.

New York’s St. John’s University have catcher Danny Bethea and infielder Kyle Lombardo also committed to Thunder Bay. Bethea is batting .259 with three doubles, two home runs and 17RBIs. Lombardo has been a backup hitting .111 with one triple.
The Cats home opener is June 4 against the Alexandria Beetles.
