THUNDER BAY -- Could the city host another Canada Games?
That's the question Coun. Hebert would like answered when he brings the idea to city council Monday night.
Hebert wants a report outlining the bid process, an assessment of the city's ability to host the games and a rundown of its sporting venues and infrastructure.
The bid would be for 2021, fitting as it would be the 40 th anniversary of the last time the city hosted the games. Hebert said volunteers came out in droves last time.
"I think the best thing to come out of the '81 games was the great volunteerism," he said.
"The volunteers came out in great numbers and that's continued on a legacy."
The question is whether the city can afford it Hebert said.
"And what money would be available provincially and federally," he said.
The city may need to upgrade or even build new facilities to make the games happen.
In some cases even the bid itself costs money. Hebert said he's spoken to a few councillors who at least want the report, hopefully back to council by the end of February if councillors even want to explore the idea, to see if it’s feasible.
"We're certainly not committing to anything," Hebert said.
