Currie, Assad earn provinical berths

Mike Assad and Jeff Currie are headed back to the provincial men's curling championship.

Mike Assad and Jeff Currie are headed back to the provincial men's curling championship.

The Thunder Bay skips on Saturday clinched the two spots up for grabs at the 2012 Men's qualifer at Fort William Curling Club, earning them a shot at a Brier appearance.

Assad (4-1) beat Art Lappalainen 9-7 in Saturday's late draw, while Currie (4-1) knocked off the Brian Burgess rink 7-4.
Both Lappalainen and Burgess are at 1-4 with one draw to go, too many losses to catch up.

Burgess got his lone win of the three-day event in the afternoon draw, knocking off Lappalained 9-4, while Assad took his only loss, falling 8-2 at the hands of the Currie foursome, a team that includes brothers Dylan and Cody Johnston and lead Mike Badiuk.

Assad, who curls alongside Jamie Childs, Kory Carr and the legendary Al Hackner, his third, captured his fourth win of the event in the morning draw, downing Burgess 6-5. Currie kept the pace, beating Lappalainen 7-5.

Round robin play wraps up on Sunday.

The Brier is scheduled for Sasktaoon starting March 3. Provincials will be played starting Feb. 5 in Sault Ste. Marie.
