Jeff Currie was down, but not out.
Trailing Brian Adams Jr.’s foursome 3-0 after three ends at the Northern Ontario men’s curling championship in Schumacher, Ont., Currie rallied with seven straight point and cruised to a 9-4 win that earned the Thunder Bay skip a berth at the Tim Hortons Brier.
Currie scored two in the fourth to pull within one, stole singles in the fifth and sixth ends before crushing Adams Jr.’s national title dreams with a steal of three more in the seventh.
Adams Jr., who topped the eight-team field with a 6-1 record in the round robin portion of the event, got one back in the eighth, but shook hands after Currie’s squad, which includes lead Jamie Childs, second Colin Koivula and third Mike McCarville, scored two in the ninth to stretch their lead to five.
It’s the first provincial title for a men’s Thunder Bay team since Scott Henderson turned the trick in 2003 and just the fourth since 1995.
The Brier is scheduled to begin March 1 at the 6,400-seat Intercity Savings Centre in Kamloops, B.C.
