Jeff Currie will take on former champion Mike Jakubo for the right to play for a provincial men’s curling championship.

Jeff Currie will take on former champion Mike Jakubo for the right to play for a provincial men’s curling championship.

Currie clinched second place Saturday and a berth in Sunday’s semifinal at the Travelers Northern Ontario Curling Association Provincials, downing Dan Lemieux 6-4 to finish the week at 5-2.

Jakubo earned his spot the hard way, winning a pair of tiebreakers to keep his hopes alive. First he knocked off Thunder Bay’s Dylan Johnston 8-7 in 11 ends to capture first match then edged Robbie Gordon 7-5 in the second tiebreaker.

The semifinal winner will take on Thunder Bay’s Brian Adams Jr. rink in Sunday’s final in Schumacher, Ont.

The first-place finishers were handed their first loss of the competition on Saturday, falling 7-6 to Johnston, who needed the victory to advance.

Adams Jr. is seeking to become the first Thunder Bay skip since Scott Henderson in 2003 to advance to the Brier.
