Eight-run seventh stops Cats cold

A disastrous seventh pushed the Thunder Bay Border Cats one game further back in the Northwoods League pennant race.
A disastrous seventh pushed the Thunder Bay Border Cats one game further back in the Northwoods League pennant race.

The front-running Alexandria Beetles scored eight times in the seventh – and final – inning on Tuesday night and doubled the Border Cats 10-5.

Jeremy Boyd hit a bases-clearing triple off Cory Caruso, the first batter the Cats reliever faced after taking over from starter Joseph Koon, erasing a 5-3 shortfall and gave the Beetles a 6-5 lead. A wild pitch scored their seventh run and then with James Kimsey on the mound, Alexandria added three more on two walks, three wild pitches and a passed ball.

Cullen Mahoney, Alex Guthrie and Ino Patron homered for Thunder Bay.

Caruso, tagged for just one earned run, took the loss, while Kevin Vangheluwe (4-3) earned the win in relief for Alexandria.
