Giant killers knock off McCarville

It just wasn’t Krista McCarville’s day.

It just wasn’t Krista McCarville’s day.

Hours after losing by five to Manitoba, McCarville’s Fort William Curling Club foursome dropped their second of the afternoon at the Scotties Tournament of Hearts, falling 7-5 to an unheralded Northwest Territories team that already beat Team Canada’s Jennifer Jones earlier in the week.

With the loss McCarville, lead Kari MacLean, second Ashley Miharija and third Tara George fell into third place at the Sault Ste. Marie event with a 6-3 record.

Like her earlier match, McCarville roared out to an early 2-0 lead in the first, only to see it erased in the second and disappear in the third when Territories skip Sharon Cormier executed a steal of one to take a 3-2 lead.

Cormier picked up another steal in the fifth and the teams traded points in the sixth and seventh and deuces in the eighth and ninth.

Needed a double in the 10th to force an extra end, McCarville was unable to accomplish the feat when Cormier ran her out of rocks.

The Thunder Bay rink will take on Nova Scotia (1-7) on Thursday morning and wrap up round-robin play on Thursday night against Jones.

At this stage, win in either match would guarantee them at least a spot in a tiebreaker.
