FORT FRANCES, Ont. – The Thunder Bay Goldcorp midget A Queens wrapped up play with a 3-1 record at the first annual Scott Clendenning Memorial Showcase in Fort Frances over the weekend.
The five-team event featured the Queens taking on four high school programs from northwestern Ontario.
After dropping their first game to the Dryden Eagles, they reeled off victories over the host Fort Frances Muskies, Beaver Brae Broncos from Kenora and the Sioux Lookout Warriors.
Against Dryden Thunder Bay fell behind early and gave up three third period goals in a 5-2 defeat.
Down 2-0 late in the second the Queens got a tally from Breanna Veneruz assisted by Delaney McLeod.
Vanessa Nicholl got the other marker for the club in the third, but Dryden, paced by Darra Zieroth’s four-point performance, helped the Eagles pull away for the win.
Taylor Gombola suffered the loss in net.
Game 2 of the event saw Thunder Bay bounce back with a hard-fought 3-2 come from behind triumph over Fort Frances.
Veneruz fed Amanda Pages to give the midget A side the early lead only to see the Muskies battle back and go up by one with under four minutes to play.
Caitlyn Arella notched the equalizer with 3:04 remaining in regulation finishing off the work of Ellen Svane and they then saw Veneruz bury the game-winner 35 seconds later to secure the victory.
Cameron Ivall picked up the win in net for the Queens.
Meeting up with Beaver Brae, Thunder Bay stormed out to 5-0 lead after one period of play and never looked back in a 12-0 drubbing of the Broncos.
Allyson Lesperance tallied twice and set-up three others in the romp while Gombola posted the shutout.
Nicholl and McLeod also added a pair each in the one-sided decision with Svane, Veneruz, Arella, Madison Lee Fullum and Brenna Bohonos supplying singles.
Bohonos also dished out four assists for a five-point performance.
Wrapping up play vs. Sioux Lookout, the Queens dominated once again skating to a 7-1 win.
Pages paced the attack scoring four times in triumph, including a natural hat trick.
Also finding the back of the net for Thunder Bay was Jessie Page, Fullum and Sarah Arella.
