The Northern Hawks got a shorthanded goal with 4:49 to go to tie it and then won it on the power play with just over two minutes remaining to defeat the Screaming Eagles 4-3 Tuesday evening in Thunder Bay Jr. B/Juvenile/AAA Hockey League action at the Tournament Centre.

The Hawks’ Nathan Spina would bag his league-leading 19th goal of the season for the only offense in the opening 20 minutes.

They would then take a two-goal lead during a man advantage in the second stanza as Mike Mapledoram converted for his second of the campaign.

The Eagles would roar back however with three tallies of their own before the frame was complete as Luke Roy, Kirk Meekis and Ryan Witherspoon all found the back of the net past Hawks’ netminder Markus Leikkari.

The score would stay that way until the latter stages of the third period when Will Moore connected with his team down a man, which set the stage for Cam Gross to beat Eagles’ goalkeeper Curtis Barker, on the power play, as he notched the game-winner at 17:52.

Cory Scali (Hawks) and Kirk Meekis (Eagles) would both chip in with two assists apiece in the contest for their respective clubs.

The Hawks held the edge in the shots on goal department by a 47-31 margin as they improved to 13-1-2 overall. With the loss the Eagles record slipped to 3-11-2 and put an end to their modest two-game winning streak.

League play continues Thursday as the Hawks meet the Jr. B Stars back at the Thunder Bay Tournament Centre. Game time is 7:30 p.m.
