The Northern Hawks rallied from a three-goal deficit to defeat the Nipigon Elks 5-3 Tuesday in a briskly, well-played Thunder Bay Jr. B Hockey League contest at the Tournament Centre.
Steven St. Jean, Landon Clearwater and Mitchell Steadwell would strike 5:13 apart in the middle portions of the opening period to put the visitors up three after 20 minutes.
In turn, the Hawks would respond with four tallies of their own to go up a goal after two periods of play.
Justin Veltri, with a pair, Geoff Vaillant and Kyle MacLeod were the Hawks’ marksmen in that middle session.
Moving on to the third, Nick Brimmer would round out the comeback triumph notching his third marker of the season with 9:40 remaining.
With both clubs entering the game sporting identical 3-0 records the Hawks took over sole possession of top spot in the standings with the victory.
Markus Leikkari made 34 saves to pick up the win while Mitchell Barr faced 40 shots in defeat.
League play resumes Saturday as the Hawks tangle with the Schreiber Falcons at the Tournament Centre. Game time is 8 p.m.
