Hawks finish winless at Keystone Cup

It’s all over at the Keystone Cup for the Northern Ontario Hawks.

The Hawks earned a 6-6 tie against the Selkirk (Man.) Fishermen in their first game on Saturday, but fell 4-2 to the Revelstoke Grizzlies in their round-robin finale, to finish the six-team tournament in last place with an 0-3-2 record.

In their morning match the Hawks got goals from six different players – Mitch Marostica, Myles Stevens, Zak Sentance, Jerry Franzese, Sean Spenrath and Ryan Sambray – in earning their second point of the tourmanent. Selkirk’s Trevor Pardoski scored midway through the final period to tie the game, after Northern Ontario took a 6-5 lead into the third.

In the evening contest, the Hawks opened the scoring on Sean Cunninghame’s marker three minutes into the game, but Revelstoke’s Dayton Martens tied it up 32 seconds later. The Grizzlies went ahead for good at 9:47 of the first, when Jakob Reichert beat Josh Mrakic in the Northern Ontario net.

Reichert doubled the B.C. lead at the 31-second mark of the second period, and put the game away with his third of the night 8:43 into the final stanza. Spenrath wrapped up the Hawks scoring with four minutes to go.

The win earned the Grizzlies a trip to Sunday’s final, where they’ll play Saskatchewan’s Tri Town Thunder at 4 p.m.
